A nationally certified educational leader, Katherine Cater currently serves as Principal of Hickory High School and chose to make Hickory her home since returning to North Carolina in 2016.

Previously, she was a founding Principal and Director of Academics for Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School of Houston, Texas.  Cristo Rey Jesuit offers a unique, innovative and groundbreaking, private, secondary educational program designed to provide new opportunities to the underserved.

Ms. Cater began her administrative career at East Wilkes High School before her role as founding Principal of Wilkes Early College High School where she was an educational pioneer and set records for new higher standards in student achievement. She oversaw the successful rapid expansion of the student body and programming with Wilkes Community College.  She was also selected to serve on the Principal Advisory for the North Carolina New Schools Project.

Ms. Cater earned her Master’s degree (MSA) in school leadership from the University of North Carolina ASU and her BA from Salem College, the oldest women’s college in the nation. Her advanced education also includes formal studies at Oxford University (England) and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern, and leadership training from Bain & Company’s executive consultancy.

Ms. Cater is a native Houstonian, mother of three children and grandmother to two, and has inspired thousands of students during her career.
